South African actress Connie Chiume, best known for her role in the "Black Panther" films, has died at age 72.
Chiume died at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg on Saturday. The cause of her death has not been released.
Chiume was born in Welkom, South Africa, in 1952, and began her acting career in the 1970s. She has appeared in numerous South African and international films and television shows, including "Sarafina!", "Invictus", and "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency".
She is perhaps best known for her role as Xhosa elder Miriam in the "Black Panther" films, a role that earned her international acclaim.
Chiume was also a passionate advocate for social justice and human rights. She was a vocal critic of apartheid and was involved in numerous charitable organizations.
