Elvis Almost Starred in 'A Star Is Born'
The King of Rock and Roll was offered the lead role in the classic film
Barbra Streisand campaigned for Elvis to play opposite her
Imagine Elvis Presley in the iconic role of John Norman Howard in "A Star Is Born." It's a casting scenario that almost became a reality, but ultimately fell through due to Elvis's untimely death.
In a recent interview, Barbra Streisand revealed that she had her sights set on Elvis for the lead role in the 1976 remake of the classic film. She even went so far as to travel to Las Vegas to meet with Elvis and discuss the project.
"I went to Vegas with my agent and we met with Elvis at his home," Streisand recalled. "He was very nice, but he just wasn't interested in doing the film. He said he didn't want to play a rock star who dies in the end."
Despite Elvis's refusal, Streisand remained determined to cast him in the role. She believed that he possessed the charisma and star power to bring the character to life.
"I really thought Elvis would be perfect for the part," Streisand said. "He had that undeniable presence and that raw energy that would have made him a truly iconic John Norman Howard."
In the end, the role went to Kris Kristofferson, who delivered a memorable performance as the self-destructive rock star. However, it's intriguing to think about what might have been if Elvis had accepted the part and starred alongside Streisand in "A Star Is Born."
